ADLAB Project’s Partners

The partners contributing to the project are eight: three ADLAB partners who work either as direct service providers (Senza Barriere) or media producers of audiodescription material (VTR) or who fulfil both functions (Bayerische Rundfunk), and five academia partners (Partners 1 to 5).

Università di Trieste has 12 Faculties and counts approx. 23.000 students. The Department of Language, Translation and Interpreting Studies  was established in 1997 and it promotes research in a wide range of areas related to interlinguistic and intercultural mediation in several languages: Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovene and Spanish. The research activities of the Department revolve around 3 main areas: translation and interpreting, language and linguistics, literary/critical studies.

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) plays a leading role in scientific research in Spain and it was selected in the top 5 universities to receive the categorisation of Campus of International Excellence by the Spanish government. The wide range of disciplines all integrated into one university helps to promote a multidisciplinary approach to research, and at the same time its campus integrates many external research institutes, scientific installations and spin-off farms. UAB will participate in the project via the Centre for Ambient Intelligence and Accessibility of Catalonia (CaiaC) from the Engineering School and Translation Studies Department. CAIAC (Centre for Ambient Intelligence and Accessibility of Catalonia) is a Research Centre at UAB.

Instituto Politécnico de Leiria (IPL) is a public institution of higher education, at the service of society, dedicated to the production and diffusion of knowledge, creation, transmission and diffusion of culture, science, technology and arts, oriented research and experimental development. IPL develops its activities in the aim of education and training, research, provision of services to the community and extending cooperation in educational, cultural and technical areas. IPL has been developing significantly its activities in areas such as research, scientific and technological knowledge conveyance and enhancement, and the provision of services to the community. The institution has been putting a lot of effort in building up its research capacity, with several new research centers being established. IPL plays a proactive role as an enabling and stimulating agent for entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer at regional level, developing numerous cultural and scientific activities with and for the region.

The Department of Applied Linguistics/Translators and Interpreters of the Faculty of Arts, University of Antwerp, is a member of CIUTI and FIT. It offers a Bachelor in Applied Linguistics, A Master in Translation Studies (with EMT label), a Master in Interpreting and the only Postgraduate European Master in Conference Interpreting for Dutch. Its MA in translation has a strong AVT and media accessibility option. The department offers training in 7 foreign languages and counts approximately 600 fully enrolled students. Its interdisciplinary departmental research group “Translation Interpreting and Intercultural Communication” (TricS) groups Belgian and international researchers in 4 TS and TI domains (Audiovisual Translation and Media Access, Literature in/and Translation, Technical Translation & Writing, and Intercultural Communication, including Community Interpreting). The AVT sub-group has expertise in live subtitling with speech recognition, interlingual and intralingual subtitling, and audio-description. It has participated in numerous funded AVT projects and organized several AVT related events, among which the 3rd International symposium on live subtitling with respeaking in 2011. It works in close collaboration with the Flemish public TV channel VRT and the commercial channel VTM for its AVT research.

Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) is a Public TV and Radio provider, offering 2 TV- and 5 Radio-Channels. As part of the German ARD-network, BR also delivers programmes for 8 shared TV programmes  including “Das Erste”, Germanys Prime Channel.  BR offers Audio-Description since 1997. It won German Audio-Description Awards in 2002, 2010 and 2011.

Senza Barriere is a non-profit-making social cooperative which began operating in 1992. The organization develops and produces multimedial support and access for the blind and partially sighted and for the deaf and hard of hearing. It offers the following services: professional filming, voiceover by professional speakers, the production of text, subtitles and audiodescription for videos in Italian, English and French, the creation of internet sites for the blind and the production of a bi-monthly magazine on CD-ROM which is distributed free to blind persons in Italy informing them of the activities of the cooperative. The “Cineteca Audio” contains many audiodescribed films, which members of the blind community can borrow on a library-type basis. The audiodescribed films are sent and returned by post free of charge. Senza Barriere is equipped with laboratories for digital audio and video mixing, audio and video recording, duplication of audiocassettes, CD-ROMs, DVDs and VHS, and quality digital printing and graphics.
